There's Something About....

There's something about days where there isn't a cloud in the sky :)

New York or Bust

We head out to the Big Apple tonight for Andrew's first and only vacation from LAC.

Nothing too hectic planned, lots of tennis, lots of shopping and picture taking. Trying to avoid the tourist traps and mainly checking out the "off the beaten path" type sites.

I usually get a little out of hand with guidebooks and drag Andrew everywhere. I'm going to make a conscious effort not to be the tour guide this time round.

Ottawa Museum Crawl Continues...

Yesterday's visit was to the ever exciting currency museum. Admission was free so that was a big plus.

Museums are soooo much more interesting and more informative when you take the tour. I was there a little early so I did the self guided version which wasn't much fun. The tour was on counterfeiting and the history of how money came about and was very well organized. The guide was actually really good, he added humour which I liked.

There was the token crazy history-buff mom with her even crazier keener-than-you -can imagine, digital- picture- taking, wanna-be-indiana-jones-jr-daughter. She was amusing until she bumped me to get a closer look at something in the collection.

Most important there is a coin worth 1.5 million dollars in this museum and that was worth the admission..oh wait...nevermind.

And while technically not a museum I also took in the Changing of the guard ceremony before I hit the museum...There is something to be said for being a tourist in your own town.

Oh no! Georges

GSP just got injured so he won't be fighting Matt Hughes for the title in September after all. : (

BJ Penn has stepped in to take his spot.

I was even thinking of getting tickets for that.

Prison Break Returns

The premiere was actually pretty good considering how bad the finale was. Some spoilers below so don't read if you don't want to know...I'll try to be more specific.

-One main character got shot in the head ...wasn't expecting that...nice.

-Michael's new nemesis is just as smart as he is and is hot on his trail. I love the idea of having an anti-hero someone who is sort of a mirror of the main character and can match wits with them...I think Jack Bauer needs one of these in 24.

-A little too much happening in the episode, there were arcs all over the map and we didn't even get to two of the escapees.

Canadian Women's Open Tennis

Wow I feel terrible for the organizers. Clijsters was the only name that didn't drop out the week before the tournament started and she just pulled out with an injury.

That sucks for the fans, the sponsors, and the commitee.

Dear Fergie, Rogers and Nike

Fergie: It is ok to come out with a song just like Gwen's Hola back girl but to steal her Harajuku girls is just wrong.

Rogers: stop sneaking in charges on my bill that you don't think I'll notice. $59.95 connection fee for switching from one service to another?

Nike: Please make Dri-Fit sheets. How cool would that be. I wouldn't get out of bed.

Back to School

Well looks like our lives will be making another adjustement in September. Andrew is officially enrolled in his classes now. If the days are anything like today it should be fun. We golfed and hung out with Roy.

Scanning When reading Internet

The following headline was on MSN today "Sir Paul changes locks" .

I was scanning the headlines instead of reading them and when I clicked I was expecting to see reggae artist Sean Paul with a new hairdo?

Crossword Puzzles

My new favourite pastime.

I used to think crossword puzzles in the newspaper were impossible. But lately I've been doing pretty well and it helps keep my brain exercised and increases my vocabulary

A few tips for crossword succes:

-first I scan through the clues and try to pick out the ones I know for sure...for the ones I'm not sure of but have and idea I see if any of the other connecting clues can reinofrce my guesses

-you do not need to know all of the answers to complete a crossword puzzle, once you start fillling in the ones you do know it will help with the others

-use a clue's tense as a hint (you should be able for figure out the last few letters of some of the words...ie: ("ed", "ing" and plurals such "s", or "a")

-know your geography or keep an atlas nearby ;) (oceans, lakes, Capitals, short forms of States)

-focus on three letter words to start they are generally the easiest to solve

-take a break and come back to your puzzle at a later time

-think logically to get the answers to the clues. Look at all the angles, pronounciations, tenses etc

-double check and make sure you are looking at an across clue or a down clue...can be confusing sometimes

-often used words (these show up on almost every crossword puzzle I've done: (oleo (butter substitute), ade (lime cooler, summer drink etc), asp (snake) , eel (fish)

-relax and have fun

My Kegmare

Apparently, if you work at at restaurant you have these terrible dreams about things going wrong on your shift.

Anyway I thought it was oddly funny that I had my own"Keg"-mare even though I don't work there.

It was funny... Andrew couldn't make his shift and he pleaded with me to take it for him. I replied "umm ok but I've never worked there before". He's said: "you'll be fine just ask for the manager when you get there to make sure its ok". I said to the manager "hi I don't know what I'm doing but Andrew needed someone to take his shift." He said that's fine here is your first table.

Basically the night went like this:

-I asked people what they wanted but didn't think to write anything down
-I grabbed whatever dishes were waiting at the station
-I didn't re-visit any tables after taking their order
-I punched things into the computer, but who knows what
-I'm pretty sure I stopped at the bar for a few drinks when I got bored

Setting (Achieving) Goals via A List

My friend Roy made a goal list in May of this year and I was tracking how well he would do at it ; ). So yesterday he posted that he completed one of the items I remember from the list and I thought I'd check to see how he did on his 7 month Agenda.

I have to say he did a pretty good job!!! I know he moved out (1) so that also means he doesn't need a bus pass (6) , he saved on his car insurance with PC Financial (7), I've heard tell he's been on a few dates (8) and looks like his holidays are coming up so he can finish up some of the travelling (2). I have no doubt he's completed 3,4,5 without much strenuous effort : )

I made a to do list for when I retire and Roy's case study prompted me to see how I did;
(made this list April)
The moral of the story, write a list of goals... publish it so your friends can hold you accountable : )!

Next on my agenda: Make a new to do list
